Our breeds > Pembroke
A small Welsh shepherd of spitz origin going back to the Middle Ages, Pembrokeshire Corgis used to be bred for herding cattle, ponies and flocks of geese and ducks. Low and compact, an adult Pem should be 10 to 11 inches tall at the withers. The Pembroke
is longer than taller, and his typical head reminds one of the fox.
His coat is short and thick, usually red and white or tricolor. Pems are rustic dogs with few health troubles, but a voracious appetite can lead to excess weight gain.
Sweet and sensitive, Pembrokes are intelligent and quick to learn and can fit into the lives of many different kinds of people and different situations. Apart from being wonderful companions, they can be trained for many purposes, like herding, hearing dogs for
the deaf, agility, truffle hunting, and so forth. Well known for being Queen Elizabeth II’s favorites, Pembroke corgis have been living
at Buckingham Palace since 1933. |
